Our History
Jerh. O’Connor Funeral Homes – A Legacy of Compassionate Funeral Care in Cork
For almost 100 years, Jerh. O’Connor Funeral Homes has been providing compassionate, dignified, and professional funeral care to the families of Cork. The company was founded by Jeremiah O’Connor, a second-generation funeral director who trained at the renowned Renouard School of Embalming in New York. Jeremiah was one of the first in Ireland to practice embalming and was a pioneer in the funeral profession. He was later joined by his two sons, Willie and Derry O’Connor, who continued to build upon the family legacy, ensuring the company’s values of care and respect continued to be upheld.
Serving Cork’s Growing Community with Expanded Locations
The company’s head office is at Coburg Street, where we have been serving families for almost a century. As Cork expanded, Jerh. O’Connor Funeral Homes opened Ireland’s first purpose-built funeral home in the 1980s at Sarsfield Road, Wilton. This location was followed by the opening of another funeral home at Temple Hill, Boreenmanna Road, ensuring we could provide comprehensive services throughout the city. In the early 2000s, we had the privilege of continuing the work of Mr. Tom Barry, a respected and long-established funeral director in Glanmire, by taking over his practice and business to serve the families of the area with the same care and professionalism. Recognising the growing need for accessible and dedicated facilities in the northern suburbs of the city, we opened our Mayfield funeral home. This location allows us to better serve families in Mayfield and surrounding areas, ensuring they receive the same level of care, dignity, and support that has defined Jerh. O’Connor Funeral Homes for generations.
